The Nurnberg brothers Friedrich and Heinrich Kapp, whose elegant Dublin tobacconist first opened for business in 1865 on Grafton Street, Dublin could scarcely have dreamt that they would participate in the birth of a legend.

Friedrich & Heinrich, who christened their shop simply 'Kapp Brothers', soon made a name for themselves making and selling quality Meerschaum and Briar Root pipes. It was not long before Charles Peterson, walked into Kapp Brothers Grafton Street premises armed with a revolutionary pipe and ambitious plans for the future.

There and then, Peterson suggested that the brothers go into partnership with him to turn his pipe dream into the world's dream pipe. They agreed and the company was renamed Kapp & Peterson. Kapp and Peterson went on to become Dublin's most fashionable and respected manufacturer and purveyor of fine smoking products. Pipe and cigar smokers would stroll down to the elegant premises for professional advice on the subtle nuances that determine a good handmade cigar or pipe. The Peterson brand was embraced by politicians, business leaders, sportsmen, artists and writers.

The skills and craft which Charles Peterson applied to his original invention are continued by the dedicated team of craftsmen at Peterson today. Whether as a gift for a friend or for your own personal use, you will appreciate the excellence of the Peterson range of cigars, tobaccos, pipes and smoking accessories.

Peterson's Irish Flake Pipe Tobacco is a dark Burley, Kentucky and Virginia blend that has no topping added so you get the full flavour of the rich tobaccos.

Uniformly cut, the dark coloured flakes are marbled with light golden browns. They are presented like a line of soldiers in the tin and give an earthy, grassy scent.

The tobacco is moist but not wet and rubs out well. It catches the flame with ease and burns slowly, evenly and thoroughly.

The nicotine content of this blend is quite high, so you may want to take it tardily or use a smaller bowl.

Please note: Pipe used is for illustration purposes only.

Tasting Notes

With a deep, woody, smoky flavour it is quite a savoury smoke that satisfies the taste buds.

To begin with there's a slight peppery taste but as you continue to appreciate the bowl the flavours take on a creamy quality, a mellow oak and musky grass.

This is a pure, full bodied and robust tobacco that may be lacking a bit of refinement but certainly packs a punch flavour wise.

Nothing really "Irish" about this, but it is a indistinguishable analog to Rattray's Stirling Flake.Full bodied, flavoursome,a little hard to rub out, folding may be more suitable a method, but a lovely presentation, tasty, and not a bad room note.I suggest a little drying out,but one of those I always come back to,it draws me irresitably.Far better than the Erinmore, which actually WAS Irish, once upon a time, but has lost something with the new manufacturer.A sad loss, the old Erinmore, now a bit too licoricy(is that a word?)for my nostalgic remembrances. This will do nicely, however non Irish it may be!
