OLIVA

The Oliva Cigar story began in the late 1800s, when Melanio Oliva started growing cigar tobacco in Cuba. His heirs carried on the family tradition in the fields, but it was his grandson Gilberto Oliva Sr. who began making cigars.

Nicaraguan tobacco helped Oliva survive. The cigar that brought it to the attention of connoisseurs debuted in 2006: Oliva Serie V. Made by a small group of rollers and blended for strength and style, the Serie V line was an immediate hit. In 2012, to pay tribute to the first man in the family to grow cigar tobacco, Oliva added the Melanio version, which is distinguished from the original by its Sumatra-seed wrapper grown in Ecuador. The No. 1 Cigar of the Year 2014, Oliva Serie V Melanio Figuarado has rich, big notes of leather framed by a range of coffee, caramel and woody intonations. It’s a classic smoke.

SERIE O

Serie O is a Puro. Made in the original tradition of growing popular seeds in diverse regions of the country to produce a distinct blend. This blend was achieved by growing their seeds in Esteli, Condega and Jalapa Valley.

Tasting Notes

This flavourful blend exhibits complex tobacco with rich coffee and dark chocolate tones. A subtle and well balanced spice is present throughout.

Pretty darn good! The first third was a little challenging with the burn but the flavours were nice...coffee and some earthy notes...no peppery bitterness at all. The smoke out put for me was very disappointing but I like thick cream smoke. The second third that all changed with an even burn and thicker, smoother smoke output. Coffee remains the main feature with dark chocolate coming through. Some very subtle spices on the finish which linger for only a moment. The final third had more coffee, some woody tones and some bready flavours. Very enjoyable, not as good as the V but up there...I could buy a box quite happily. Any time of day smoke. Not too light, not to heavy. Lasted only 40mins but I can’t complain.

Had one of these quite fresh from the packet, and was pleased with the results. Earthy beginnings give way to spice and strong, wooden leather tones, with a lingering oak aftertaste. Smoke production seems to increase exponentially throughout, resulting in a draw of astronomic proportions in the last third, and then... it's all over! A little faster burning than Cuban robustos, it seems, but not any more loose or poorly crafted. Certainly worth the price paid, and certainly worthwhile sitting on; if it's this full on in its green state then I can barely wait to try one that's been adequately aged. The only downside was a tiny split that had to be plugged with a craftily placed finger tip throughout, but this was a failing in handling on my own part, and not one involved in manufacture.
