OLIVA

The Oliva Cigar story began in the late 1800s, when Melanio Oliva started growing cigar tobacco in Cuba. His heirs carried on the family tradition in the fields, but it was his grandson Gilberto Oliva Sr. who began making cigars.

Nicaraguan tobacco helped Oliva survive. The cigar that brought it to the attention of connoisseurs debuted in 2006: Oliva Serie V. Made by a small group of rollers and blended for strength and style, the Serie V line was an immediate hit. In 2012, to pay tribute to the first man in the family to grow cigar tobacco, Oliva added the Melanio version, which is distinguished from the original by its Sumatra-seed wrapper grown in Ecuador. The No. 1 Cigar of the Year 2014, Oliva Serie V Melanio Figuarado has rich, big notes of leather framed by a range of coffee, caramel and woody intonations. It’s a classic smoke.

SERIE V MELANIO

Serie V Melanio is hand rolled using expertly fermented ligero fillers, leaves known for their robust and rich flavour. This special cigar is sure to exceed a premium cigar smoker’s highest expectation. This carefully aged Jalapa blend produces a particularly flavoured smoke. Rated 96 and the 2014 Cigar of the Year.

Tasting Notes

This flavourful blend exhibits complex tobacco with rich coffee and dark chocolate tones. A subtle and well balanced spice is present throughout.

Last summer these were a regular in my monthly orders after I had been searching for a slightly cheaper alternative to my Monte 2/Diplo.2/P2 obsession which was slowly bankrupting me. For whatever reason which I can no longer recall I stopped including them in my orders. Last month for whatever reason I reminded myself I hadn't had one for a long while and I should order one to try and recall why I ever stopped. The cigar looks every bit a premium cigar from the very decorative band to the excellent construction and shine on the wrapper, it looks great! You'd be forgiven for thinking this would be a tight draw from the look and feel of the cigar but its anything but, intact its a very loose draw while the flavours are sweet initially the draw actually left me feeling like no cigar ever has, This cigar will last 60-75 minutes and by the end I'd felt like I'd just smoked 20 cigarettes in quick succession (and I haven't done that in many years, I don't smoke cigarettes anymore). Its the only cigar where the hit from the smoke overpowers the flavour. Though there was something that just kept me going it was only at the end I felt a little worse for wear. I will try another one just to reassess again at a later date but it I am torn on this one.
