OLIVA

The Oliva Cigar story began in the late 1800s, when Melanio Oliva started growing cigar tobacco in Cuba. His heirs carried on the family tradition in the fields, but it was his grandson Gilberto Oliva Sr. who began making cigars.

Nicaraguan tobacco helped Oliva survive. The cigar that brought it to the attention of connoisseurs debuted in 2006: Oliva Serie V. Made by a small group of rollers and blended for strength and style, the Serie V line was an immediate hit. In 2012, to pay tribute to the first man in the family to grow cigar tobacco, Oliva added the Melanio version, which is distinguished from the original by its Sumatra-seed wrapper grown in Ecuador. The No. 1 Cigar of the Year 2014, Oliva Serie V Melanio Figuarado has rich, big notes of leather framed by a range of coffee, caramel and woody intonations. It’s a classic smoke.

SERIE V

Serie V is a complex blend of Nicaraguan long filler tobaccos. Blended with specially fermented Jalapa Valley ligero, and finished with a high priming Sun Grown Wrapper.

Tasting Notes

This flavourful blend exhibits complex tobacco with rich coffee and dark chocolate tones. A subtle and well balanced spice is present throughout.

"...The head and cap of this dark robusto are crafted with many seams. Cocoa and roasted coffee bean notes lead to hints of wood and an orange-peel acidity..."

As always, excellent service was provided over the counter. I asked for something Nicaraguan and full bodied; this cigar more than delivered! Flawless construction with a tight cap, almost invisible seem and a beautiful Bournville-esque wrapper. Pre-light draw gave cedar and Woody spices. These notes defined the first inch and were a pleasant introduction. The next three inches: wow! Cedar, spice, plum pudding, dark chocolate and a pleasant acidity to cut through the richer and sweeter notes. Pepper grew as it approached the end, but it remained rich and satisfying, even as the smoke got too hot to handle. Will definitely be looking to purchase a few more of these and try the other vitolas in Serie V.

There are some really distinctive flavours in this. First cigar I’ve got chocolate from and it has a taste extremely similar to strongbow blackcurrent. I guess it’s a little bit like a chocolate bar with raisins in or something similar (dark dried fruit) . It also has a real dark wood flavour to it. For me personally it was a little too on the strong side however I could still apreaciate the flavours .

This cigar is without a doubt the best robusto I have ever had,I challenge anybody with a love of the psd4,the boli rc or the monty eddy to smoke this stogie and not be surprised and very impressed,it is dark full bodied and packs an unexpected punch. I have smoked a few cigars by Oliva(series v,g and o and all have been good quality but the series v are definitely the best)and the series v rival any Cuban I can think of,next time I find the time and patience for a robusto it will be one of these!!!

Oliva make great cigars. The serie G belicosso is a particular favourite. The serie V's are also lovely. This double robusto is an impressive size and, because I'm a newbie, I can't talk with any authoriy about chocolate and espresso flavours, I'll deal with the stuff I can comment on. Beautifully made, perfect burn, loads od smoke, easy draw. Smells lovely - less than £12 for an impressive looking cigar. Great. Definately on my must have humidor list.
