Description

These cigars are the result of collaboration between Mitchell Orchant, Tor Imports and Oliva to produce a uniquely blended Oliva cigar tailored to meet Mitchell’s high standards and the UK cigar smokers palate; all at affordable prices!

You cannot get any better than Oliva! Look at the high profile awards that they have collected previously:-

- Oliva V Melanio Figuarado just been awarded the No1 Cigar of the Year by the Cigar Aficionado blind test panel
- the Oliva V Melanio Double Toro was ranked number 5 cigar of 2014 by the Cigar Journal
- Oliva were presented with the UK Cigar Producer of the Year in 2014 by the Spectator Cigar Awards in November in London.

Mitchell underwent a rigorous sampling exercise in the summer of 2014 to carefully select the blend and create a stylish design using the award winning Serie V Melanio as his inspiration.

A little bit of background to Oliva....

The Oliva Cigar story began in the late 1800s, when Melanio Oliva started growing cigar tobacco in Cuba. His heirs carried on the family tradition in the fields, but it was his grandson Gilberto Oliva Sr. who began making cigars.

As with so many cigar stories, Gilberto Oliva Sr. faced a difficult road. He left his native Cuba in 1964, and eventually started working for the Plasencia family in Honduras. In 1995 he and his son Gilberto Jr. created a cigar within Plasencia’s factory called Gilberto Oliva. A year later, they set out to open a factory of their own, and shortened their brand name to Oliva.

Business was tough in those days, and Oliva struggled. Faced with dwindling reserves of cash, in a cost-cutting move they turned to Gilberto Sr.’s robust stocks of Nicaraguan tobacco, which changed the flavour profile of Oliva cigars at a time when the interest in Nicaraguan flavour was increasing.

Nicaraguan tobacco helped Oliva survive. The cigar that brought it to the attention of connoisseurs debuted in 2006: Oliva Serie V. Made by a small group of rollers and blended for strength and style, the Serie V line was an immediate hit. In 2012, to pay tribute to the first man in the family to grow cigar tobacco, Oliva added the Melanio version, which is distinguished from the original by its Sumatra-seed wrapper grown in Ecuador. The No1 Cigar of the Year 2014, Oliva Serie V Melanio Figuarado has rich, big notes of leather framed by a range of coffee, caramel and woody intonations. It’s a classic smoke.

Oliva’s cigars have appeared on our Top 25 list nine times in a row. This is the first time the company has been named Cigar of the Year.

Having tried all three of these now I have to say I am impressed. It's a woody, spicy blend at first but creamier, smooth tones towards the end. I prefer sweeter cigars so don't think I would invest in these as a regular smoke but the price and quaility do justify buying a box to see how they get on with a bit more maturing. Of the three the chubby was my favourite followed by the shorty and then the skinny. All good cigars though for the novice and connoisseur.

Took delivery of a sampler pack and a box of 10 Shorties on Monday. I am what was described as a 'Newbie' to the world of cigars and have been working my way through a variety of Cuban and New World Cigars since May last year. I had one of these last night for the first time and can honestly say that it was of of my most enjoyable smokes so far. Cut and then smoked over a leisurely 55 minutes, the draw was consistent, it retained its ash without the need to relight and had a wonderful smooth taste and flavour through to the end. I am still finding my favourite from the array of quality cigars available but this is definitely high on my list!
