MONTECRISTO

Montecristo is the best known and probably the most appreciated brand of Havanas throughout the world. It forms the benchmark for many Havana smokers against which other brands are judged.

The name comes from Alexandre Dumas’ famous novel ‘The Count of Montecristo’, which was a firm favourite when read to the Torcedores (cigar rollers) at the factory where it was founded in 1935.

The original Montecristo range of sizes was composed of a narrow assortment numbered from 1 to 5. Today it consists of a wide variety of vitolas to cover every level of the cigar enthusiast’s needs.

Whether it is within the classic medium-to-full line, the lighter Open Series or the newer, more powerful, Linea 1935, Montecristo’s perfectly balanced blends are all created exclusively with selected filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo zone, home of the finest tobaccos in the world.

ESPECIAL

Introduced in 1971 and sharing its dimensions with the Cohibas Lanceros, the Especial offers a slightly more intense flavour with its elegant size.

Tasting Notes

The pre-lit aroma of this cigar was somewhat earthy and the when the lit the draw was perfect; exactly how a cigar should be. The sweet/spicy taste developed into sweet, vanilla pod flavours. A truly flawless cigar.

Had this for six months and was looking forward to trying this vitola. Poured a glass of beaujolais and sat in the sun in the garden. Unfortunately for 40 minutes I battled with it. Tight draw, loose wrapper and constant relight. Taste was there but so demanding to achieve. The last third was lovely, how I expected the rest to be!!! Not sure I will be tempted to try again which is a shame as the taste when it finally got going was delicious. To me the point of a cigar is to relax, this did not happen this time. Low score only for the hassle and poor construction. I understand this is just bad luck but review is based on my particular cigar only

The mid-late 2018 boxes have been particularly amazing and well-constructed. They tend to draw far more easily and consistently than in the past these days. Sometimes a little firm on the draw, as is kind of how they should be really, but still producing plenty of smoke and the flavours are all there. Rich, complex and showing great legs for aging. Predominantly woodsy, creamy coffee, baking chocolate, gingerbread and hints of cinnamon and citrus. They start mellow and subtle and slowly develop through the length of the cigar to the darker flavours. Still some power in the final third but smoked to the nub before getting at all hot. Magnificent cigars, often overlooked along with the also excellent Especial No.2.

The Montecristo especial has always been a favourite of mine. However... From my experience, the Montecristo Especial is a risky cigar. It is a 50% chance it smokes and has a 50% chance of being plugged. On the 30/11/2020 i purchased a Montecristo especial from cgarsltd for £21.19. On the 14/11/2021 the Montecristo Especial from cgarsltd is priced at £29.99. The Montecristo Especial from cgarsltd is a risky 50/50 and now over priced. Weekends in Barcelona... book a cheap flight and you will find all cgarsltd Cubans at half the price.

Lanceros are getting popular again more and more again and this is not an exception. Great colder experience montecristo cigar. Smooth, earthy, leathery and coffee notes. David - C.Gars Ltd Cigar Ambassador

I'm not a huge fan of Monticristo's and these didn't do anything for that opinion. The ash only held for less than half an inch and fell on me at least 3 times. The draw was very hard and the taste is nowhere near that of a Cohiba siglo IV which is a similar size cigar. Rather disappointed for the price of this cigar. It's looks mighty classy though.
