Don`t exactly know about a terrible start - Monte #4`s, like all Montes tends to get "interesting" as you smoke it - they`re not the smoothest stogies in the world, but certainly are ones which grab your attention. The Monte #4 is a damn good petit corona and the ne plus ultra of the Monte line - "most popular Cuban cigar sold". It`s a nice little smoke - starts off spicy, gets earthy and spicy, leather flavours creep in and - it`s highly recommended. Only thing stopping me rating this as a 5 is that I`d tend to compare this to a Monte #2 - unfair, I know - when a #2 is good, it`s unbeatable. When it`s bad..... ahem. The #4`s are totally consistent, for what they are, they`re great, and this has a regular spot in my humi. ;-)Highly recommended, but..... the rough edge just clips half a star off. Four and a half out of five - go smoke some. ;-)) written by Dave Francis

A very harsh start that mellowed into a nice smooth smoke. Lots of smoke, lots of flavour. Another Montecristo that gave me terrible heartburn, though. written by Andy Mellor, GBR

A good smoke, but slightly woody for my tastes. If you enjoy these I would consider buying non-cuban for a fraction of the price and at least as good a smoke written by Alex

A great small smoke. Perfect if you want a fantastic cigar but you only have half an hour to smoke it. Medium-bodied and not incredibly complex probably due to its small ring gauge. But its probably the best example of this size made in Havana. Chocolaty and leathery and always consistent. written by The Mantis

A full-bodied, deep, rich almost power-house of a cigar. So much packed into a smaller size. Best enjoyed with a Cabernet or Port or dark beer, possbily bourbon. Best of all, it lasts nearly an hour. Must age well to enjoy all this cigar has to offer and make need to work or poke a bit to ease the often tight roll. I think of this as the flavor and depth that Fuente went after when creating the Opus X. If you like the Opus X, do try one of these. written by Ashton NH
