HOYO DE MONETERREY

Hoyo de Monterrey owes its origin to the town of San Juan y Martinez, which lies at the heart of the Vuelta Abajo zone. Here the Hoyo de Monterrey plantation, one of the great Vegas de Primera, can be reached through a gate on the town's main square inscribed "Hoyo de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1960."

"Hoyo" literally means "hole" and in this case describes the low-lying position of the plantation on the fertile banks of San Juan y Martinez river.  Jose Gener, a Spaniard from Tarragona, first used the name of his vega on a brand of Habanos in 1865.

The flavour of Hoyo de Monterrey's blend makes it an attractive choice for those who seek a delicate yet aromatic Habano that is lighter to the taste but with great elegance and complexity.

The brand is renowned for its Double Corona and for the prestigious Epicure series, the No.1 and No.2, to which the longer Epicure Especial was added in 2008. There is also a range of vitolas known as the Le Hoyo Series. These are generally accepted to be slightly stronger and spicier than the brand’s classic range.

All sizes are ‘tripalarga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade using filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo tobacco zone.

EPICURE NO. 2

The robusto of choice for many cigar epicureans! Formerly presented with no bands, now it sports no less than two so its identity is clear.

Tasting Notes

It lacks the strength of the Cohibas, but it is superior to the Upmanns. Mild flavours at first, blended nicely into a complex finish. Excellent smoke!

"There’s a delightful nut-and-honey sweetness to this smoke, which burns evenly but has a slightly firm draw. A spicy hint of ground nutmeg really livens things up before the warm, toasty finish..."

the ultimate all round cigar - great for both a relaxing medium length smoke or a shorter one. fine draw from start to finish, mild and mellow but not weak I feel this is a far superior smoke to the epicure no1

New to the cigar word so I thought IÂ’d begin mild and work my way up slowly. The construction of the cigar was great. It had a tight ash which held for around an inch and a half. It did need a few touch ups but never needed to be relit. The construction was flawless. No real pepper on the retro till the final third. Notes of general nuttiness and cedar with some complexity towards the end of the cigar. A really enjoyable smoke I would recommend.

A nice experience, draw was good producing lots of creamy smoke, but burn was a bit uneven and needed touching up a bit, but still produced a long strong ash. Flavours were sweet and nutty and with a little pepper. It burnt slowly and lasted over an hour and fifteen.

This cigar is never going to put hairs on your chest, that’s for sure. A very mild smoke, which will suite the American market, I’m sure. Having reached about no. 10 of my box, I must say that the consistency is more than satisfactory. Draw.... 9 Construction... 8. Some , but very few touch ups. Favour..8.....Very mild throughout. Some complexity in the final third. There are other great cigars out there which give more bangs for buck, Try Ramon Allones specially selected , Bolivar Royal coronas or Partagas Series D No.4 Overall, a pleasant smoke with consistency. Final thought. You have to buy a box to determine how good a cigar actually is. One off purchases tell you nothing . Cuban cigars are great when you can ascertain the quality in a box. This requires patience and a deep pocket.
