Description Ref # 404T

Germain & Son commenced manufacturing tobacco back in 1820. A family business located in Jersey boasting perfect climatic controlled conditions.

The experience gained by succeeding generations in the art of blending has produced the range of fine individual tobaccos available today. Their new factory is situated on the site of the original premises facing the harbour of St Helier from whence, 180 years ago, Jersey-built schooners sailed to many parts of the world, some returning with cargoes of leaf tobacco for Germain's factory.

The name of this tobacco originates from the early days when all tobaccos were pressed into cakes before cutting. Four types of Virginian tobaccos are blended with Cavendish and a specially prepared Black Tobacco.

The complete blend is then flavoured in accordance with a 70 year old formula to produce a honey sweet smoking tobacco with a unique aroma.

Please note: Pipe used is for illustration purposes only.

Tasting Notes

The Germains Full Latakia is made using Cyprian Latakia leaf with the usual distinctive leathery, tarry odour accompanied by a characterful smokey flavour, which is due to a long curing process over smokey fires.

Germains have sufficiently moistened the tobacco to provide a clean cool smoke.

Latakia is the Marmite of the tobacco world, you will either love it or hate it.
It is usually added to a blend in small proportions to add extra character and complexity to a blend, it is not generally smoked pure by even the most avid Latakia enthusiasts.

Mac Baren's Vintage Syrian was (and is - if I can find one of their last tins) one of my favourite tobaccos. Cyprian Latakia by comparison is heavy and one dimensional. That being said Germains have done a nice job with this blend - I presume it is not 100% Latakia though it does look like it might be - producing a smoke that reminds me very much of the stuff my granddad used to smoke and enjoy. But watch out if you smoke it in a big bowl - I've just finished a load in my big old Savinelli 141 and by the time I got to the dying embers the smokey, tarry, leathery flavours for which this leaf is renown were overwhelming. Very nice tobacco.
