FONSECA

Don Francisco Fonseca founded his brand in the 1890's.

A handsome man, who cared deeply for appearances, he passed his sartorial precision on to his cigars, which he dressed in a silky tissue paper - a tradition that continues to this day on all the Habanos that bear his name.

The image of Francisco Fonseca, who developed this brand in 1906, still adorns the box today. Only in limited distribution, the Fonseca brand is considered to exhibit a rich but mild flavour. Fonseca's delicate blend of filler and binder tobaccos from the Vuelta Abajo zone makes it the ideal Habano to follow a light meal.

Tasting Notes

Good construction and easy drawing, the flavour is somewhat spicy, with a medium body. Very well manufactured, it is a small gem.

88 / 100

"Light in appearance with some stitchy veins. It's a creamy smoke with dried orange peel and floral notes rounding out the flavour..."

Lovely easy draw, nutty and spicy, very underrated superb smoke, right to the end. Dont discount these, you will not be disappointed.

It was interesting to read the other comments, as I experienced a bit of this and a bit of that. For example, in my opinion it was a medium draw that needed effort, albeit moderate, to keep it going. Nevertheless, the construction was first class. Amongst cigar smokers I not only have to list myself under ‘occasional’ but also as a weakling. In other words I could not possibly cope with something like a Punch. Mildness and sweet natured are my buzz words, and this one hits the spot. I got nuts, cedar and – like another reviewer – a hint of harshness at the beginning that disappeared very quickly and then developed into a delightful subtle flavour that lasted. Only halfway through did I get some tarry spiciness but even then it was not overpowering, and once again, quite curiously, it disappeared again. I had this maturing in my humidor for four years so that might have something to do with it but from me it comes highly recommended. This was my first Fonseca but definitely not the last; an early evening smoke that goes along nicely with Port and Pecorino.

My first Fonseca ever! It's a pretty stick with a silky smooth wrapper. On firing her up the first thought were; ha this is as I suspected creamy and mild... Absolutely fine for the price and perhaps a great early morning puff? Then things changed markedly. Wafts of morning toast on the nose and strokes of cedar to the tongue, I slowly sat up. The second third of this cigar has plenty of stories to tell and they keep getting better. The last third just got sweeter and increasingly buttery.... In a very nice way. With an inch and half to go I was blind sided by a substantial nicotine hit but the flavours kept me dragging until my fingers burnt. So no, maybe not the great morning smoke I suspected but yes a fantastic after meal smoke for sure. Possibly the best value for money stick I have tried this year! Outstanding value for money, don't be sniffy because of the price, these girls could hold their own in much more costly company. Definitely worth a punt for any cigar aficionado.

These cigars are a treat for the senses, from their unique paper wrapping to the end of the smoke. There are slight grassy notes from the unlit draw which hint at the mild flavour to come. 1st third: Creamy, tobacco with a slight toasty edge to it, almost bordering on the acrid. Not too much nicotine and a nicely medium body of smoke. 2nd third: Developed into a creamy hazelnut note - still not too strong in the nicotine level. Final third: Some of the harshness from the initial light returns and the smoke becomes more acrid, irritating the back of the throat somewhat. I have since smoked others and they had less harshness and were more consistently creamy throughout, a pleasant cigar to "sip" over an hour or so. Good even burn and I have yet to have a badly constructed one although the sample number is admittedly low!

I was offered one of these when I never heard of the brand. What a pleasant surprise though. A nice, fresh medium aroma with delicately spicy flavours. Very easy draw and good construction. Oh... and did I mention value for money? written by Mihai
