COHIBA

Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos.

It was created in 1966 for President Fidel Castro himself and was made at the then top secret, but now world famous, El LLaguito factory. At first, it was only seen outside Cuba as gifts for heads of state and visiting diplomats.

Since 1982 Cohiba has been available in limited quantities to the open market.

The name is an ancient Taino Indian word for the bunches of tobacco leaves that Columbus first saw being smoked by the original inhabitants of Cuba - the earliest known form of a Habano.

The leaves for Cohiba are the "selection of selection" from the 5 finest Vegas de Primera in San Juan y Martinez and San Luis districts of the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Uniquely amongst Habanos up to three of Cohiba's filler leaves , the seco, ligero and the rare medio tiempo, undergo an additional fermentation in barrels. This unique process produces a special aroma and flavour you will only find in Cohiba.

Cohiba encompasses four different ‘Líneas’ or Lines: Línea Clásica, Línea 1492, Línea Maduro 5 and finally the Línea Behike range.

Through such constant innovation, Cohiba has held its position at the leading edge of the cigar world. It was also the first Havana brand to offer a Reserva cigar in 2002 and a Gran Reserva in 2009 made with tobaccos specially aged for a minimum of three and five years respectively.

All Cohiba sizes are ‘totalmente a mano, tripa larga’, – long filler, totally handmade.

SIGLO I  - La Linea 1492

The Cohiba Línea 1492 range was first announced at a reception at the Captain General's Palace in Havana on 4th November 1992, which took place during a Festival held to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus.

The Linea 1492, originally consisting of five sizes - Siglo I, II, III, IV and V before the VI was introduced in 2002, were expressly introduced to mark Columbus's 500th Anniversary and each Siglo (which means 'Century' in Spanish) commemorates one the five subsequent centuries.

The Linea 1492 is classified as medium flavoured and remains the lightest flavoured line of Cohibas.

Please note: Matches not included.

Tasting Notes

91 / 100

"The reddish, colorado wrapper and neat triple cap make this a charming cigar to behold. The draw is open and even, as is the burn, showing a big steeped saffron note that ushers in additional layers of brioche, leather and white pepper before the floral, cedary finish..."

Just wanted to give a recent review to the more recent ones showing here that gave me some concern. My first cohiba, not disappointed, easy to draw, even burn and lasted 35 mins. Happy chappy 😁

I concur with recent disappointed reviews of this offering from Cohiba. My example was nicely aged and I had been looking forward to a half hour of indulgence. In the event it was, well, a non event. Bland and lacking development, my advice is try something else, such as the quietly magnificent Vegas Robaina Familiar. Similar price and far superior.

Somewhat disappointed with this cigar. I had built it up a little I suppose based on the price and brand name. A moderately tight draw just south of unsmokable. No real taste to speak of although it improved very slightly in the second half. Weak pallid smoke and and uneven, lopsided burn. Pairing with Thatchers Summer Haze cider helped a little and a swig after each draw seemed to help out. Way overpriced for the experience but I'm sure I'll try something else from Cohiba in the near future.

Mine had a very tight draw and I didn't think much of the flavour either, really quite bland with not much going on, very narrow. I will purchase again as this could have been due to the tight draw and the fact that the cigar was very obviously overpacked, I thought Cohiba had some of the best quality control in the industry? Never mind, I have a Maduro 5 that will hopefully make up for it. Definitely sample it, I have no doubt that one without these problems would be a great smoke, these things can happen with hand made products of course.
