There’s not many boutique brands that have had as big a “hype train” as Caldwell. They seem to have gone from a little-known brand, to one of the most talked about, in no time at all! Sometimes “fad cigars” can leave us a bit disappointed, but this one has some legitimacy. This brand will surprise and delight you and is certainly one that you should submit to the latest trend with. Unique and interesting blending meets quality and style. This is one hype train that won’t be derailed!

Robert Caldwell is the face of Caldwell Cigar Co. a company founded in 2014 that produces its core line of cigars at Tabacalera William Ventura in the Dominican Republic. Caldwell entered the cigar industry in 2008, when he launched a concierge-like service that provides cigars and cigar accessories to high-end hotels and restaurants. Today, his portfolio boasts over 10 brands made in three different countries, and he’s known for his popular collaborative blending projects with other cigar makers.

A smooth, medium-bodied cigar, Eastern Standard features a silky-smooth hybrid leaf of Connecticut Ecuadorian wrapper.

All tobaccos used for this cigar are aged between 6 and 7 years.

I tried this one after have the Eastern Standard Corretto, and i was surprised to find this one was much creamier/smoother. The burn and draw was impeccable just like the Corretto, hints of caramel and vanilla coming through the woodyness.

From mobile (apologies for any spelling/formatting errors): Smoking the cigar at the moment, I was about to post a ‘disappointed’ review. White pepper and little else to begin with. I also had to make quite a deep cut to get a decent draw . . . then . . . the middle third: the creaminess starts to come through: the burn perfect. Still the pepper, but calmed down by the creamy, faint vanilla sweetness. Paired with a Shackleton as an experiment but I think it would go better with a nice rum. Down to the last third, the draw is still firm, but not tight, a little leather coming through, the burn still perfect. I had wondered if the Caldwell line was partly hype, but this cigar (the lower end of their pricing) is at least good enough to make me want to work my way up. The build is excellent, the draw so-so (if like me you like lots of smoke) and the true flavour takes a wee while to come through, but this is definitely proof that the Caldwell line isn’t just all hype. I’ll definitely be buying another to judge consistency, at the very least. Last third: now more of a black pepper with a faint molasses sweetness, rather than vanilla, but still mellow in strength. Definitely not a cigar to choose if you’re in a hurry - you need to give this one time to develop. This isn’t the kind of cigar I’d normally buy - my preference is Padron - but if I’ve the time to get past the first third, then I’ll definitely buy more. On the whole, a very good mid-range cigar ... but you do need to give it time. Oh, and the branding? Wonderful. You can’t help but love that band. 7/10
