COHIBA

Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos.

It was created in 1966 for President Fidel Castro himself and was made at the then top secret, but now world famous, El LLaguito factory. At first, it was only seen outside Cuba as gifts for heads of state and visiting diplomats.

Since 1982 Cohiba has been available in limited quantities to the open market.

The name is an ancient Taino Indian word for the bunches of tobacco leaves that Columbus first saw being smoked by the original inhabitants of Cuba - the earliest known form of a Habano.

The leaves for Cohiba are the "selection of selection" from the 5 finest Vegas de Primera in San Juan y Martinez and San Luis districts of the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Uniquely amongst Habanos up to three of Cohiba's filler leaves , the seco, ligero and the rare medio tiempo, undergo an additional fermentation in barrels. This unique process produces a special aroma and flavour you will only find in Cohiba.

BEHIKE BHK 54

With a limited annual production and the only Cuban cigar to include a fourth filler leaf (medio tiempo). It is without doubt the most exclusive 'regular' production cigar in the Cuban portfolio.

The number of a BHK stands for its ring gauge, so this stout model boasts a diameter of 54/64ths of an inch, which leaves plenty of room for the fourth component in the filler – the Medio Tiempo – that brings a startling intensity to the flavour.

Mitchell recommendsBehikes have a limited annual production so when they are gone - that’s it for the year. That makes them a candidate for laying down, maturing and collecting and many customers are already making 10 year plans for laying down a quantity of BHK’s annually.

Tasting Notes

The BHK’s have a different blend to the 40th anniversary Behikes (aged 5 years) as well as an extra Medio tiempo filler leaf which will give the cigar a very distinct flavour characteristic as this is a dark leaf from the top of the plant.

95/100

"Bold and leathery with assertive underpinnings of roasted coffee bean and earth. The pigtailed cigar is perfectly balanced by complex toffee notes that lead to a walnut finish..."

Not sure what to make of this Behike 54. Maybe I had a lot of high expectations from it but in the end it did deliver. Its a complicated cigar given the price and elusive nature of the stick however I think its definitely on the upper end of the cigar world. Id say try it and be the judge of it yourself. In summary its smooth and peppery - thats it. I think the 52 is my next purchase.

Unfortunately its not possible to review these cigars while completely ignoring the enormous price mark-up. They can be fantastic cigars, lovely subtle, complex flavours and beautifully rolled.. but the quality and enjoyment is just not in proportion to the huge price. A lot of it is just clever marketing to wealthy cigar smokers with more money than sense. Equally great and even better quality Havana cigars can be found for a small fraction of the price of these. These cigars, at most, should be half the price.

A well made smooth and mild one and a half hour smoke, has a lovely delicate flavour with a slight sweetness now and then, but not very sweet which is good, didn't need to relight, about 2 inches left it will start to go bitter and quite unpleasant so expect to end it with about an inch and a half left, i did feel slightly fatigued after but probably because i'm not use to such a long smoke, worth every penny in any case.

I bought two of these as part of sampler packs in 2010 and must admit I smoked the first one the day they arrived - magnificent. So very nearly three years later the second one was lit this morning and wow! The BHK is a superbly made cigar and there was a slight pang as I took it out the humidor but only slight because I have been looking forward to this for ages. A very even burn with a fair bit of fragrant smoke (even passers by commented that it smelled good). The taste was evenly delicious from start to finish with only a tiny hint of bitterness towards the last inch. Three years in the humidor has made the flavours even more rounded than I remember (that is not implying that its sibling had any sharp edges). A smooth mix of leather and cedar with a hint of spice made this a very enjoyable smoke. Easily the best cigar I have smoked in the last six months!

I can't write about cigars with as much knowledge as previous reviewer(s) but this cigar was utterly superb. Started mild but flavorful and ended with a good spice. Even towards the end there was no unpleasant after taste and it was a shame to consign it to the ash tray.
