Description

The Charatan Rolls is a luxury tobacco composition which has been prepared to produce high quality rolls. The rolls of tobacco have been carefully selected from ripe, African flue cured tobacco, and rounded off by using some traditional cured Perique Tobacco.

In 1863 Frederick Charatan, opened a shop in Mansell Street, London where he began to carve Meerschaum pipes. These got very popular very quickly and Charatan moved to a bigger workshop in Prescott street. Here he began to make the briar pipes that made the name Charatan World famous. on the retirement of his father in 1910 Reuben Charatan took over the family business and the business was wholly owned by the Charatan family until 1960.

During the noughties, Dunhill tobacco of London, through the House of Edgeworth introduced a range of Charatan cigars, manufactured exclusively for the UK cigar smoker. However British American Tobacco (Dunhill Tobacco of London) made the decision in December 2016 to withdraw from the hand made cigar and pipe tobacco market in 2017.

So to combat this announcement Tor Imports made a successful approach to purchase the Charatan brand from Dunhill Tobacco of London allowing them to keep the brand alive.

Tor started work to launch a Charatan Pipe Tobacco with their Global pipe tobacco manufacturer in 2017 to create and test replica blends with the pipe clubs around Europe and the UK with a view to introducing a brand new range of Pipe tobaccos on exhaustion of the current stock of the Dunhill range. It took months before they were happy that they had achieved the blends to be as close a possible.

I can’t answer for the Dunhill original Rolls but I have tried the Peterson DeLux Navy Roll incarnation. The two are supposed to be versions of the same blend but there are some notable differences. Charatan Rolls seem to have a more peppery Perique that comes through from the start and the Virginia is a little grassier and hay like (just my opinion). The Peterson version is more fruity, figgy and date like and that stays with you longer in the bowl, and it’s lighter on the pepper than the Charatan version. Both are top notch VaPers and imho it depends on what you’re after, pepper and spice or complex fruits. For me it’s the latter but that’s not to say I’m not going to enjoy every bowl of this Charatan blend.

In my opinion this is a better blend than any other roll tobacco available in the UK being stronger and having more flavour. It is nearly as good as Orlik Bull's Eye was.I still have some of the Orlik and could compare them both. The only drawback to this blend is the price so I only smoke it occasionally.

As with the Dark Flake, this is supposedly a substitute for Dunhills Rolls, again its not. Nowhere close. Fruitier, yes, less boney (meaning it tends not to stick in the craw), no little spikes of harshness unlike the Dunhill original (whichever iteration) However, a delicious smoke and one I would buy often IF it was better priced. Personally £1.00 - £1.50 cheaper would make this more palatable. It just isnt truly worth the cost. I feel that the makers are basing the price on the names Dunhill and Charatan, calling a Mercedes a Rolls doesnt make it one. OK moan bit over, back to the tobacco. I went thru my first tin with rapidity as I enjoyed the blend, Va/Pers are a favourite of mine. This smokes easily, generally with one relight, I noticed the char has to be match made, lighters appear to scorch the flavour somewhat. Relights are fine with butane. Somewhat less dry compared to the Dunhill, but never moist, no gurgling. No dottle either, which is always a plus point. The tobacco burns clean leaving almost nothing for later. They have made this blend well proportioned and very tasty. Just the price will inhibit a further purchase for me.
