BOLIVAR

Simon Bolivar was one of the great historic figures of the 19th Century who liberated much of South America from Spanish rule.

The Bolivar brand was created in 1902 and is based today in the Partagas factory which is in the heart of Havana.

It is perhaps not surprising that a Habano named after such a powerful figure is blended to match his might. Bolivar is among the strongest, most full bodied of all Habanos. It boasts an unrivalled richness of flavour in its blend of Vuelta Abajo zone filler and binder tobacco that makes it one of the most sought-after marques amongst experienced smokers.

All sizes of Bolivar are ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano,’ – long filler, totally handmade. It is the brand of choice for enthusiasts who like strong flavours!

PETIT BELICOSO

The 2009 Limited Edition Bolivar Petit Belicosos is a well balanced rich cigar with a shape that honours the iconic Bolivar Belicoso Fino.

One of the most full bodied Habanos that boasts an unrivalled richness of flavour that makes it one of the most sought-after brands amongst experienced smokers.

The Limited Edition distinguishes itself for the careful selection of two-year aged selected tobacco leaves (wrapper, binder and filler) which turns this product into something very special.

To say I love Bolivar is an understatement. The brand has got some serious recognition of late and its possibly down to the maturity of cigars 2007 and before. I must say though, this Belicosos tasted true to the brand, and the tobacco used is almost as brilliant as those rolled prior to 2007. I spoke to Ian in Turmeaus and we both chatted about how the Bolivar brand isn't as full as we had expected, compared to the likes of Partagas. However this cigar was pretty complex for the little rippers size! First third hit me with (As above) sweet, dark cocoa notes and accompanied by a 15yo scotch was more subtle than I had expected in earthiness. Cedar notes were recognisable during the 2nd and 3rd thirds and the taste maintained smoothness, no harshness even when I poked my pipe airer through the end to nub this smoke. I really enjoyed this cigar, maybe if it was the length of a Monte 2 I'd be happier! But we can dream! Thanks for reading, Alex Instagram: @HabanosAl

To make a strange comparison to chocolate..if your not a dark chocolate fan then this cigar might not be for you. The Bolivar is extremly rich and shares a similar sharpness/bitterness to a deep dark high cocoa content chocolate...for that reason this is a cigar very much for the later evening..I do not doubt that some of this sharpness may mellow out with further ageing and turn this cigar into a real classic beauty. What I really like about this cigar is its aroma as it burns, deep smooth chocolatey hazelnuts..its the sort of aroma that you'd love to sit in a room and smell while others smoke it. An aroma second to none that I have smoked..I just wish this transfered a little more in the taste..though again I repeat this may well happen with a little more time on its side. A definite to add and age with your collection but perhaps not an everyday smoke.
