Samuel Gawith 1792 Dark Flake Pipe Tobacco 50g (Tin)
Date Added: Sunday 29 April, 2018
Following recommendations from others after my enjoyment of SG Navy Flake, I was then encouraged to try SG 1792 Flake. The flake is dark and smells very similar to SG Navy Flake with the notable omission of alcohol in the nose. I rubbed this down and allowed it to dry for several hours and then smoked it in my Peterson Derry Rustic Straight 106 Pipe. This is a strong tobacco flavour from the start, it is similar to SG Navy Flake but with the alcohol taste removed. It is lovely and strong (assuming you like the taste of tobacco) and probably one of the purest pipe tobaccos that I sampled. It was slow burning (3/4 of the bowl lasted 1 hour and 15 minutes) but I enjoyed it so much I smoked every last drop of tobacco in the bowl. It was strong in flavours but gave no bight to the tongue or the back of the throat. After lighting it required two more relights (nothing to write home about). It reminded me of sitting in a room with a peat fire burning, brought back memories there. The smoke it produced was thick and to my nose pleasant, but to a non smoker probably would have been q

This stuff is amazing, from opening the tin to filling the bowl and smoking it, it reminds me very much of Mac Baren HH Syrian Latakia. I was almost convinced the people packing these tins had used Latakia. The tin note is smokey stables followed by cornucrescine hoof oil, almost like the scent from Tarmac on a hot summers day after rain :). A strong yet mellow smoke, the room note is very pleasant and sweet :) will for sure be ordering a ton of this :)

When I first smoked this I found it quite tame and the cherry and tobacco flavours were quite subtle. I tried it again a few weeks later and had quite a shock of how flavoured it had become, a new burst of cherry came through and the smoke was delightful. This is a really nice tobacco but I would recommend leaving it for a few weeks once opened to really get a full flavour.

Oh my word, wow, yummy, creamy and smooth, an explosion of of Cherry in the mouth leaves you feeling beyond satisfied with this wonderful fragrant tobacco, with a room note to match. A real must have for any smoker of aromatics. Definitely found a place in my rotation.

I cant believe its taken me this long to try this tobacco (pipe smoker for well over 30 years). I always assumed this would be too strong for my tastes, but this may actually be the smoothest, best balanced tobacco (Latakia blend or otherwise) I have ever tried. When makers describe their products as slow burning and cool smoking, this is exactly how I always expected them to be, but they so rarely were. Medium strength, with enough Latakia to keep things interesting, but not so much that you couldnt use this as an all-day smoke. Easy to rub out, and not too much moisture. Added to my favourites, and will probably be my go-to tobacco from now on. Cant rate this highly enough. Try it yourself, you might just agree.
