Varela-Hermanos, a 3rd-generation Panamanian family distillery which produces Ron Abuelo, an authentic dark rum made from sugar cane that is carefully aged in oak casks.
Today, almost a century after Don José started operations in Pesé, a third generation that follows the same family traditions runs Varela Hermanos S.A., Panama’s main liqueur industry.
As the name suggests, it has been aged for 7 years in oak bourbon barrels and is blended before being bottled.
Abuelo is one of the very few distilleries that grow their own sugar cane.
Nose: Dry at first, with hints of flowers and straw but soon gives way to heavier, richer notes of vanilla and caramel.
Palate: Sweet at the tip of the tongue with warm flavours of toffee and caramel. The mid-palate introduces floral notes of vanilla that give way to apple blossom just before the finish.
Finish: Ron Abuelo finishes with earthy notes of leather and almost no burn in the throat.
