DREW ESTATE

The Drew Estate story is one of daring, heartbreak & success but, most of all, one of passion for cigars and the country of Nicaragua, where we have been making cigars since 1996.

Jonathan Drew & Marvin Samel are not your average cigar makers, their story does not start in Cuba, or with fathers in the cigar business. It started with a dream, and through their can-do spirit and never-say-die attitude made Drew Estate one of the premier cigar manufacturers on the planet. The two frat brothers from New York started out small…. Small, as in a 16 square foot retail kiosk in the World Trade Center in NYC.

In late 1998, Jonathan Drew moved to Esteli, Nicaragua with the hopes of starting a rebirth in the cigar world. With a handful of rollers and an even smaller handful of money, the story of “That Crazy Gringo” began.

UNDERCROWN SHADE

Undercrown Shade marks the first release blended by Drew Estate Master Blender Willy Herrera not to fall under the Herrera Estelí brand family. Herrera’s continued involvement in blending and brand development within Drew Estate is evident with this new blend, as Herrera worked extensively with the Undercrown roller team who blended the original Undercrown line to develop this Connecticut blend.

The final blend is medium-bodied, lush & ultra-smooth, flavours that only a shade grown wrapper can deliver. And so it is with great bravado that they share Undercrown Shade, and the continuing story from our factory floor.

Very easy mild and mellow smoke. Reminiscent of a Davidoff- but just not quite as smooth. But very enjoyable and well worth the money. Excellent construction and very easy burn. Ash holds well and no bitterness. Perfect morning smoke with a danish and coffee.

This cigar had a lot of nice tasting notes, the first third brought floral, light coffee and woody flavours. The second and last third gave smooth roasted nut/coffee flavours. I imagine this cigar would be great for an afternoon smoke. The reason I am only giving 3/5 as a score is the burn was very wonky and just wouldnt be corrected no matter what I did, which was a shame as one side seemed to want to burn a hell of a lot quicker than I wanted to smoke it.
