Manuel Quesada has been making cigars since 1974. His original cigars were mild bodied, most of them a blend of Dominican filler and binder tobaccos cloaked with light Connecticut-seed wrappers. His latest endeavors are bolder, more vibrant smokes. The Casa Magna Colorado is his greatest innovation. He joined forces with Nicaragua’s largest grower of cigar tobacco, Nestor Plasencia, and created this blend in Plasencia’s Segovia Cigar factory.

These cigars have a bold heart of Cuban-seed tobacco, all of it grown in two very different regions of Nicaragua: tobacco from Estelí tends to be strong, while that grown in Jalapa, to the north, is typically more balanced and elegant.

Tasting Notes

The two Nicaraguan leaves used in this blend combine to create a full-flavored cigar, full of rich coffee notes and balanced by a cedary sweetness with a hint of raisins. The word “Colorado” in the brand name refers to the dark, slightly reddish hue of the wrapper.

I usually go for the lighter bodied cigars, but I thought Id give this one a go. I was surprised at how kind this cigar was; I was expecting a tighter draw as the cigar was pretty packed, especially for a 60 ring gauge, however it seems as though the construction was perfect. I had no issues with the draw at all, which is one of the most important things to me in a cigar experience. Throughout the first third I wasnt quite sure what to expect, and as I smoked I noticed an ever so slight bitterness, which thankfully didnt last long. it was followed by notes of white pepper and coffee, and then carried through to a dominant oakiness with a touch of fruity sweetness on the aftertaste through the last two thirds. I think that for a brand Id never tried before, I definitely wouldnt say no to one of these in future. Going in my favourites.
