Hoyo de Monterrey Double Coronas Cabinet Selection Cigar - 1 Single
Date Added: Friday 03 June, 2016
Reviewed by Tom Anderson (June 2001) The package arrived at my house; I opened it and was stunned by what I saw. Like identical triplets, 3 magnificent Hoyo de Monterrey double coronas from José Gener. Beautiful light brown smooth wrapper 7.5inches long and with a ring gauge of 49. I placed them carefully in my luxury El Presidente humidor. (You know, the one with the glass lid and the inaccurate hygrometer J ) I wanted to allow them to rest for a few hours to recover from the rigours of travel with Royal Mail. Cigar 1: I have a palate, which can be likened to a sumo wrestlers armpit, but my nasal lining is to die for. I enjoy a cigar best in my car and that evening I was going out! I took the 1st HdM and snipped the cap with my Xigar and sucked experimentally on the unlit cigar. The initial taste was of too much air so I gently squeezed the cigar and thought that it had been rolled a bit too loose. I toasted the foot with my Blazer and it lit evenly but with loads of smoke. Each draw and I could see the burning end racing towards me. It had been rolled too loose. It burned q

When the 49 ring gauge hit her teeth with a gnash, "Divine" she muttered and hit the ashtray with ash. Now the cigar is half gone, but oh what a glow the luster, the strength, the tobacco - whoa, when, what to her wandering eyes should appear, but a 6 pack of Heineken! Oh, what a beer! Oh my word what a fantastic cigar. It was so smooth and creamy and really mild. It did burn quite quickly which was a bit sad as I was enjoying it so much and did get a bit warm, but I smoked it until there was nothing left to hold onto. The ash looked wonderful. I really recommend this cigar - an exceptionally good smoke.

Got a couple of these recently for a holiday next month - since they arrived I have been eager to try one after all the positive reviews, and as the wife wasn't feeling too well and decided to go bed early, I did the loving husband thing and took the opportunity to slip away to my man-cave and try one out (or, the official line, to let her get a few hours uninterrupted sleep before I came to bed...) Wow! What a superb little cigar. The flavour was right there from the start (thankfully, on such a small stick) and I found it evolved constantly throughout the half hour or so it lasted me (I wasn't paying particularly close attention to the clock...) Burn was perfect, with no touch-ups needed. Draw was a little tight, but that wasn't a terrible thing on a little one like this. The cigar itself was absolutely delicious. Grass, caramel, dark chocolate, honey and coffee appeared at various points (there were a few draws that reminded me particularly of a caramel latte) Throughout the entire cigar there was also plenty of cream and nuts (at one point, it was specifically walnut).

Hmm, what to say, well, very good. Quite floral at first before finding a shallow but satisfying mix of Cedar and leather. Burn was a bit erratic but I think this was down to quite loose packing, maybe a Friday afternoon effort. A nice cigar, didn't make me go wow but not a lot to criticise about it. I got the occasional hint of something special but just not enough of it. Very enjoyable, perhaps another example may get me a bit more effusive. Who knows, that's the joy of cigars.
