Description Ref # NRSquadron

It all started in Kendal, England in 1792. Thomas Harrison was a successful snuff maker. Jane Harrison Thomas’s daughter, eloped in 1838 to a young man of Kendal, Samuel Gawith. When Mr. Harrison died in 1841, he left the business to his daughter and son-in-law, and over the years Samuel Gawith continued to prosper.

In 1865, Samuel Gawith died prematurely at the age of 48. His eldest son, also called Samuel, was only 22 and his father had wisely left the firm in the hands of three trustees, one of whom was this son. The elder trustee was Henry Hoggarth, a boyhood friend and neighbour in Lowther Street who had founded a Kendal firm of land agents and surveyors.

In 1878, Samuel and his younger brother, John Edward Gawith decided amicably to go their separate ways and so the two Gawith firms came into being. Samuel took over the snuff mill and business at Mealbank, and John stayed on in Lowther Street.

The firm in Lowther Street went through some troubled times but, in 1887, a new partnership was founded between Samuel’s youngest brother, William Henry, and Henry Hoggarth junior, to be known as Gawith Hoggarth Company.

Gawith Hoggarth Company continued to manufacture tobacco products and snuff at the Lowther Street works until 2009, when they moved to new business premises.

Then in 2015, the two companies returned back together under one roof.

Tasting Notes

When we think of an ‘English’ tobacco we think of copious amounts of Latakia and Squadron Leader doesn’t disappoint if this is something you are looking for!!

A magnificent combination of Orientals, Latakia and Virginia's, containing both dark and golden tobaccos.

The smoke is silky smooth, with a complex and balanced array of flavours, with every tobacco represented.

With no added casings or flavours being added to this tobacco, you will get all the gorgeous natural flavours of the tobacco coming through.

The Turkish giving the smoke an almost sour cream note. The darker Virginias leaving a earthy note, like walking through a meadow after an April shower. The larger amount of Golden Virginia brings a refined note of hey, making the smoke sweet but also creamy.

Not overly strong in the nicotine department, but the flavours still make for a very satisfying smoke.

That tasted peppery bust smooth and a bit traditional because I think because of the latakia. Do you know any other good samuel gawith blends with a spicy taste just that when you open the tin out comes a strong rum and pepper smell?

Traditional flat tin, easy to load the bowl and excellent cool smoke, and does not die after a moment or two without a puff

Promoted to 5 *****: This tobacco has to be one of the finest if not the best tobacco I have ever had the pleasure of smoking. The (soapy taste) is absolutely amazing, any that know about tobacco in general should know that the (soapy taste) is a signature of quality in a superior product. An all day smoke for sure. Definitely has NO1 spot in my rotation (0_-)
