EL REY DEL MUNDO

The Cuban cigar brand of El Rey Del Mundo was believed to be first created in 1848 by German businessman Emilio Ohmstedt who also created Sanch Panza cigars. After Ohmstedt’s death the Cuban cigar company was passed on to Antonio Allones sometime around 1882. El Rey Del Mundo (or ‘King of the World’ in Spanish) was at one time the most expensive and prestigious cigar brand in the world - Under Allones’ command it reached the height of its prestige.

Allones’ company was later bought out by the Diaz Hermanos y Cia venture owned by Candido Vega Diaz who then later renamed themselves the Rey Del Mundo Cigar Co. To highlight their most famous asset, although other brands such as Sancho Panza, Rafael González, and Don Cándido were also produced by them.

The success lives on to this day in a selected range of Habanos renowned for its light to medium flavour and consistency.

The El Rey del Mundo La Reina UK Regional Edition 2018 was rated #7 by Cigar Journals Top 25: Cigar of the Year 2020.

The cigar measures 7 1/2” (192mm) x 38 ring gauge and is presented in sliding lid boxes of 24. Each cigar is finished with a signature pigtail, synonymous with the Laguito No. 1 vitola and all have been rolled at the world famous El Laguito factory in Havana, the spiritual home for this iconic size.

The size was created by Eduardo Rivera and the first to be offered to President Fidel Castro in 1963, almost two decades before it was commercially launched and made available as the Cohiba Lanceros in 1982.

Today the most qualified and skilled technicians for this challenging size remain at the factory and for this reason, the Cuban Cigar Industry decided to locate all of the La Reina production at the prestigious El Laguito factory. We believe this is a first for any Habanos Regional Edition.

UK REGIONAL EDITIONS

Since 2005, the companies that normally distribute Habano cigars in different territories around the world have been invited by Habanos SA to bid for the chance to create their own sizes in less well known Habanos brands. These are then made in limited quantities for sale only in their own markets. These cigars are known as Regional Editions.

To qualify being called a Regional Edition cigar they must be of limited production in a standard Habanos vitola (size) that is new to that particular brand. They must only be sold to customers in the distributors area and since 2006 have been available in individually numbered boxes with each cigar having a second band. The second band for cigars heading to the UK market used to read "Exclusivo Reino Unido" (Exclusive to United Kingdom) but since 2011 has been changed to "Exclusivo Gran Bretana" (Exclusive to Great Britain).

Tasting Notes

#7 Cigar Journal's Top 25 cigars of 2020

"From the start, this Lancero with a pretty pigtail shows its qualities. It is smooth, creamy, and has thick smoke with the opulent sweetness of molasses, cappuccino, and honeydew melon, and a pinch of pepper in the finish – a taste-bud pleaser."

I adore this format of cigar so had to try these. Perfect construction, gorgeous smooth wrapper with an oily sheen and producing thick mouthfuls of smoke from a slightly firm draw. Opens mild-medium with classic El Rey flavours - creamy, light woodiness and some baked dough with a little citrus tang. Into the second third it gets richer with more complexity and subtlety developing - slightly earthy, herbal and burnt sugar notes. Great balance of flavour and already tasting like it has a little age on it. Exceptionally good quality seco has been used in this blend. The final third slowly progresses to the upper end of medium body just touching almost on full in the back end, with some slightly darker flavours developing - light roasted coffee bean and hints of liquorice, retaining that cream, dough and herbal profile. Smoked to the last inch before getting at all harsh and burned evenly throughout. These are beautiful lazy afternoon cigars with finesse and complexity and they should age wonderfully. Most reminiscent of the old ERDM Tainos with some similar qualities of the Trinidad Fundadores also in the second half.
