Description

It all started in Kendal, England in 1792. Thomas Harrison was a successful snuff maker. Jane Harrison Thomas’s daughter, eloped in 1838 to a young man of Kendal, Samuel Gawith. When Mr. Harrison died in 1841, he left the business to his daughter and son-in-law, and over the years Samuel Gawith continued to prosper.

In 1865, Samuel Gawith died prematurely at the age of 48. His eldest son, also called Samuel, was only 22 and his father had wisely left the firm in the hands of three trustees, one of whom was this son. The elder trustee was Henry Hoggarth, a boyhood friend and neighbour in Lowther Street who had founded a Kendal firm of land agents and surveyors.

In 1878, Samuel and his younger brother, John Edward Gawith decided amicably to go their separate ways and so the two Gawith firms came into being. Samuel took over the snuff mill and business at Mealbank, and John stayed on in Lowther Street.

The firm in Lowther Street went through some troubled times but, in 1887, a new partnership was founded between Samuel’s youngest brother, William Henry, and Henry Hoggarth junior, to be known as Gawith Hoggarth Company.

Gawith Hoggarth Company continued to manufacture tobacco products and snuff at the Lowther Street works until 2009, when they moved to new business premises.

And now, in 2015, the two companies will be back together under one roof.

Gawith Hoggarth's Balkan Mixture is a charming blend of Latakia, Virginia and Oriental leaves. There is no doubt about the high quality of tobaccos used and their expertly blended ratios.

First off there's the Latakia which gives this mixture its darker colours and dominant smoky aroma. Whereas many Latakia blends can be a little salty or acerbic in nature, this Latakia is smooth and rounded while still being full of flavour.

The Virginias are sweet, supporting the Latakia, giving the blend stability.

The Orientals are aromatic and give the blend a subtle spice and creaminess.

Tasting Notes

The shag-like ready rubbed strands are varying shades of brown comprising of almost yellow to golden brown, hazelnut and nearly black.

This mixture is easy to load into a pipe and catches the flame with ease. It burns cool with plentiful smoke though it's gentle on the tongue.

This could easily be an all day, every day smoke or one you treasure to lift your spirits on a cold, damp day.

This is first class stuff. I have long been looking for a replacement for much-missed Balkan Sobranie and since the disappearance of Red Rapparee this is the best I have found. Long may it continue.

One of the best English blends I've tried I hope there's one just as strong as night cap

Yes as the two reviews before me state this tobacco has an extremely over bearing perfumed smell on the initial opening and being a newbie to pipes I got impatient and attempted to smoke a bowl after just 5 mins of opening, Ill be quite frank, I thought it was very unpleasant it reminded me of perfume and whiskey but not in a pleasant way. I then emptied the whole lot and put it back loose in the tine and left the lid off as it is quite compressed and moist. The day after I found that the smell of the tobacco had changed a lot, to me smelled of a nice sweet normal tobacco. I lit up a bowl and was pleasantly surprised at how smooth it was and how it had transformed. To my pallet it does have a very nice complex flavour to it, subtle sweetness and floral/fruity nuttiness about it. As far as room note goes its a nice aroma with hints of what you taste. I give this a personal rating of 3 beacause if you are like me and looking for something with a bit more flavour for example, I really like the principe Chico chocolate cigars and want something akin to that flavour and aroma wise then this is not for you. I do like this tobacco and I think it is a good smoke, but me personally, I dont think I would get it again. So to be fair it is a good smoke but the 3 star is a reflection of my opinion and not bashing the tobacco.
