It all started in Kendal, England in 1792. Thomas Harrison was a successful snuff maker. Jane Harrison Thomas’s daughter, eloped in 1838 to a young man of Kendal, Samuel Gawith. When Mr. Harrison died in 1841, he left the business to his daughter and son-in-law, and over the years Samuel Gawith continued to prosper.

In 1865, Samuel Gawith died prematurely at the age of 48. His eldest son, also called Samuel, was only 22 and his father had wisely left the firm in the hands of three trustees, one of whom was this son. The elder trustee was Henry Hoggarth, a boyhood friend and neighbour in Lowther Street who had founded a Kendal firm of land agents and surveyors.

In 1878, Samuel and his younger brother, John Edward Gawith decided amicably to go their separate ways and so the two Gawith firms came into being. Samuel took over the snuff mill and business at Mealbank, and John stayed on in Lowther Street.

The firm in Lowther Street went through some troubled times but, in 1887, a new partnership was founded between Samuel’s youngest brother, William Henry, and Henry Hoggarth junior, to be known as Gawith Hoggarth Company.

Gawith Hoggarth Company continued to manufacture tobacco products and snuff at the Lowther Street works until 2009, when they moved to new business premises.

And now, in 2015, the two companies will be back together under one roof.

The Ennerdale Flake is one of our all time favourite tobacco’s. As one of our customers once said ‘it is one of those tobacco’s which just seems to tingle the taste buds.’

The Ennerdale Flake is a medium strength tobacco, which burns with a strong presence of almond in a very smooth, cool burning, slightly aromatic, smoke.

Here in the shop we often get reports of the aroma resembling the marzipan freshly peeled off the Christmas cake.

I liked it the smoky taste but the tin smelled like a disinfectant cleaner cleaner and a car air freshener in a good way the second smell was my grandfather's opinion.

If you’ve never tried a Lakeland blend, beware! Gawith Hoggarth flakes are beautifully made and Ennerdale is the gem of the Lakeland’s. Fold, roll, pack and ignite! Perfumed and sweet I love it!!!!!!! It’s unique and a must try for every pipe smoker.

Well what can i say about this tobacco? When I first opened the tin I was repulsed by the over powering smell of some kind of perfume or really strong Turkish delight! I left it over night then came back to it and the aroma had mellowed. I filled a bowl and tentatively lit up and WOW! What a difference, a beautiful smooth and really pleasant smell arose from the pipe, it tasted damn good too. It took me right back to my childhood when IÂ’d sit on the path outside my family home and wait for the old guy that lives a few doors down to pass by walking his dog and puffing on his pipe, it was that old smell that was rising from my pipe! Just magical, I highly recommend it just donÂ’t be put off by the initial smell when opening the tin. IÂ’ll be ordering more for sure.

This is a good alternative to some stronger tobaccos. A good, cool, all day smoke. When I first opened the tin, the tobacco smelt very perfumed, perhaps too much so. But how wrong I was, when I took my first puff I was greeted by the extremely pleasant flavours of vanilla with hazel nut. Sweet, but highly flavoured. The aroma of this tobacco is phenomenal, powering throughout the room. The scent lasting a long time with hints of sweet and fruity nuts. This tobacco does have a reputation for “ghosting” your pipe, leaving remnants of the smoke for a long time to come. But, considering the amazing flavour, I don't really see this as a downside as it makes for some very interesting combinations when mixed with other tobaccos. All in all, this tobacco is best for those who enjoy a lighter more flavourful smoke. - Connor Turmeaus Norfolk

This is the most full bodied of the range. While the strength of the casing isn’t quite as potent as the Grasmere, it more than makes up for it with a base of rich dark tobacco that gives this blend a full, dark chocolatey backbone. Interestingly, there’s also a hint of clove in there which would normally put me off, but I think it works really well with the overall sweetness of the blend. Calum - Turmeaus Chester
