Glenfiddich Festival Experiment #3

This past weekend myself and Liam were lucky to be invited to Dufftown in Scotland for the 3rd annual Glenfiddich Festival!

A fun filled two-day festival in the historic whisky town, with live music, performing arts and of course luxurious Glenfiddich whisky!

Now it wasn’t all drinking beautiful whisky cocktails and eating beautiful food, we also had the opportunity to head off for a tour of the famous distillery, which truly was sight to behold, and certainly gave me a much better idea of the sheer artistry that goes in to making the Glenfiddich brand stand out from the crowd.

In the evenings we were entertained by the likes of Twin Atlantic, Fatherson and Franz Ferdinand closed out the party on the Monday night!

All in all, it was an amazing experience for us both (despite the torrential rain that managed to turn out tents in the paddling pools HAHA!)

A massive thank you to all of the people involved in the event, and thank you to our hosts Tim and Sam from William Grant and Sons, Roll on next year!

AVO Cigars

Shared experiences are at the heart of everything AVO. From moments worth remembering, to stories worth telling and notes worth savoring, an AVO Night is one filled with friendship, music, laughter, strength of character and generosity of spirit.

Every cigar is a careful arrangement that mirrors the unexpected finesse of Avo’s music – complex, layered, effortlessly smooth and infinitely approachable. Each a virtuoso performance, that elevates the cigar maker’s craft into the realm of art. From his flair for improvisation, to his passion for travel and infinite enthusiasm for life, AVO cigars are truly a reflection of Avo… the man.

“When you open your life to the magic of exotic cultures, the possibilities can be extraordinary.”

Avo Uvezian

In a noisy world filled with chaos and unpredictability, it took a musician to create harmony amidst the commotion. With his passion for jazz, an irresistible charm, and an appetite for new experiences, Avo Uvezian became a composer of fine cigars. As a way of life, he created rare and beautiful moments to be savored and shared by all. To share a moment with AVO is to immerse yourself in a merging of exotic flavors and cultures; in a timeless appreciation for the classics; in spontaneity, guided by inspiration. And within each cigar, you will find a unique experience, a shared moment, a thing worth remembering and passing on to friends both old and new.

AVO Orchant Seleccion Syncro Robusto

In 2018, we released the highly acclaimed AVO Orchant Seleccion Syncro Robusto exclusively to C.Gars and Turmeaus in the UK. The cigar is part of the Syncro South America Ritmo range and features tobaccos from 7 different countries. Our clients have overwhelmingly enjoyed this cigar and it has quickly become one of the standout smokes in the UK market.

Inspired by the cosmopolitan lifestyle of Avo Uvezian, our Master Blender has ventured to the untamed heart of Central America. Capturing sweet and spicy flavors from the rich, volcanic soil of Nicaragua and blending them with the soft, creamy notes of the finest Dominican leaves. Resulting in a smooth and balanced box-pressed cigar with unexpected depth and complexity.

Together — Avo Uvezian, Hendrik Kelner and the next generation of gifted cigar craftsmen — developed this harmonious experience filled with tobacco tradition and expertise. This full-bodied blend offers rich, toasted notes of cocoa and spice with an unforgettably creamy finish.

Avo’s legacy captured in every format, with tobacco aged for at least six years, artistically woven into each cigar. A masterpiece meant for special occasions. A remarkably smooth, yet richly complex, medium-bodied composition balanced with notes of wood, spice, and dry sweet fruit.

Avo’s most personal blend, specially crafted for the connoisseur. Composed of highly aromatic tobacco harvested from Avo’s private estate, this medium-to-full-bodied blend resonates with exceptionally rich character delivering flavors of butter and spice with subtle nuttiness.

This cigar is the harmony of two cigar legends, Avo Uvezian and Master Blender Hendrik Kelner. Their collaboration offers an unforgettable experience of balance, enjoyment and refined taste. This inviting blend is composed using rare tobaccos that have been aged for 25 years.

Dalmore Whisky

The Dalmore has always set the highest standards in whisky craftsmanship.

Dalmore Heritage

The Dalmore’s heritage dates back to 1263. It was in this year that Colin of Kintail, Chief of the Clan Mackenzie, saved King Alexander III from the fury of a charging stag. In recognition of this noble act the King granted the Mackenzie Clan the right to use the 12 pointed Royal stag emblem on their coat of arms.

Exceptional Casks

At The Dalmore, we continue an age old heritage that treasures the sanctity of the cask. Our precious spirit is finessed in exceptional casks, hand selected by Master Distiller, Richard Paterson and sourced from the world’s finest bodegas and exclusive wineries. To create a more complex character, some of our whiskies benefit from an extra flourish in additional casks. Every cask that we source is of impeccable quality and hand-selected to produce our renowned Single Malt Whisky.

How Long Should I Age My Cigars?

The benefits of aging cigars will vary from cigar to cigar. With that in mind, we can begin to consider whether our cigars are worth additional aging at your cigar merchant or in your own humidor… Some cigar experts agree that as little as one month will improve a cigar’s flavour. However, you can continue to improve your Havana cigars year in and year out and sometimes almost indefinitely though certain brands and vitolas will age better than others. In general terms stronger cigars with darker wrappers will lend themselves to longer aging than lighter strength cigars. Brands such as Partagas, Punch Ramon Allones, Cohiba and Sancho Panza are considered fuller strength cigars ideal for laying down and improvement in the long term. These brands will continuously mature and develop, losing some of the strength over time but retaining the flavours which will mellow to some extent with time. Lighter brands such as El Rey del Mundo, Por Larranaga, Romeo y Julieta (again in general terms will age well for the first 10 years but will then tend to flat line and not improve further) it’s not an exact science with Cuban cigars , it’s all a case of trial and error!

It’s all about the storage, what temperature and what relative humidity are you maturing your cigars at? Colder and lower humidity slows the maturation process, and prolongs the potential life cycle of the cigar.

It is hard to predict how a cigar will age, and after maturing it for numerous months, you may not even like it. The cigar will be smoother and perhaps more complex, but you may not like the new profile of your once favourite cigar, aged. That’s because there is no established length of time that ensures your cigars will taste better. Only you, the smoker, can really know how much additional time your cigars require, and that can only be achieved by certain means; that is, by smoking the cigars at various intervals as they age.

Group Cigars Aged More Grouped Cigars Room of Aged cigars

Here are a few tips/facts in regard to aging cigars:

– A reasonable time frame for improving the taste of most premium handmade cigars is at least two to three months.

– Full-bodied cigars that are blended with more ligero leaf tend to improve more significantly in terms of their complexity and balance over longer time periods, milder cigars rarely do.

– Lower humidity levels within the range of 63% to 65% RH will improve a cigars flavours and aromas over time.

– A “bad” tasting cigar perhaps from a not so good vintage will not improve no matter how long you age it. This is usually due to poor fermentation, and once the cigar is rolled, it’s pretty much set. However, a cigar that may be a bit bitter or grassy in taste out of the box can do a 180 turnaround with some prudent aging time

– Cigars made with tobaccos that already have many years of aging on them will not improve much more with additional aging at home. Cigars that are released with 5 to 10 or even more years of aging are, by design, made to be smoked right out of the box.

Remember to be patient when you age cigars. If you have the means, double your box order so you can smoke one as soon as you receive one. This means you can store the other box and let it age slowly. Taking the time to try an aged cigar as the months go on, until you are happy with the final result.

How to find the perfect cigar

Cigar aficionados tend to stick with what they know, otherwise why spend money on a cigar to not enjoy it? As they say though “variety is the spice of life!”, therefore sometimes it’s good to mix it up and introduce your palate to the ever growing and wonderful flavours there is out there to discover.

Whether you’re looking for a new everyday smoke or you are just stepping into the cigar world, there are a few questions you need to ask yourself:

When do I want to enjoy my cigar?
How much time will I have to enjoy it?
Will I need to store my cigar?
What is my budget?

Once you know the answer to these you will be on the right path to finding your perfect smoke.

When it comes to your own personal budget, there’s no need to be afraid of the lower budget smokes, there are some excellent value cigars which don’t compromise on the overall quality. We like to make the experience finding your cigar as easy as possible, try our Advanced Search and just alter price range for your preference.

The time you have to smoke your cigar plays a big part too, you don’t want to be picking up a large, 2 hour smoke when you only have a spare 30 minutes to sit back, relax and enjoy; you’ll just waste your cigar – it’s never good practice to go back to a cigar you’ve left to go out as you can lose some of the nicer flavours and replace with some that are… not so nice. Make sure you know when and where you will be smoking your cigar, this then gives you a guideline on what size to go for. If you only have 30 minutes, it’s ideal to go for a Petit Corona size, for example one of the world’s most popular cigars; the Montecristo No. 4. If you have around an hour, you have sizes like Edmundo, Lancero and Piramide. You then have the quicker smokes, ideal if you are going on a short walk or just want to get in a quick cigar without sacrificing on time, the Panatela and Perla are perfect for this. Or even less time, there are some superb quality mini and purito size cigars which won’t compromise on flavour or quality and should only last 5 – 10mins.
