H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

CONNOISSEUR A

Connossieur is a historic Linea within the H.Upmann brand, whose most relevant size was the very much appreciated. This Linea was updated with the Connossieur A, a trendy vitola that incorporated for the first time the Connossieur exclusive ring which enhances the image of H.Upmann in the 21st Century.

Connossieur A, is aimed exclusively at Habanos Specialists and La Casa del Habano franchise stores.

Connossieur A is a Genios - The size selected is highly appreciated by smokers that now will have the occasion to enjoy heavy ring gauge Habanos within the H.Upmann brand with its classic features of flavour and aroma.

For those of you reaching for the dictionary for the spelling of “Connoisseur” (or typing it into Google as is probably more the case these days), your suspicions will indeed be confirmed. The small error on the box, band and ribbon has been noted and will be rectified by Habanos S.A. on future production runs. This surely will make the current batch with the incorrect version somewhat of a valuable collector’s item.

Tasting Notes

88 / 100

"The draw of this light brown cigar is a bit thin, but still imparts a smoke that begins floral and tea-like before showing some tangy cedar and a bit of dried fruit. The burn is fairly even throughout..."

I echo comments regarding uneven burn. I had to touch it up a number of times which was quite irritating to be honest. However, classic mellow low strength Upmann cigar. My cigar personally was quite hard to draw on. I suspect I was just unlucky as Ive not had this problem with Upmann before. It loosened up in the last half hour so it wasnt all hard work!

A lovely smoke, nice easy draw producing lots of creamy smoke, very smooth. Burn was a little uneven but still produced a strong long ash. Very satisfying.

I'll keep it short and sweet. If you like smoking the Upmann magnum 46 & 50, you should try this. Its a very smooth sweet tasting cigar. It has a thick creamy taste with dark chocolate snf coffee taste. The amount of smoke it produces is similar to its siblings. The only negative issue I found was that the burn was not even but saying that, ig built I would say 2.5 inches of ash before falling off. I've still got another one and will see of that has uneven burn or whether it was that specific cigar that had the burn issue. In conclusion, give it a try, you won't be disappointed.
