Rafael Gonzalez was created in the 1930's.

It was in this brand that the 6 1/2 inch by 42 gauge cigar, which has the factory name of Cervantes, was the first called a Lonsdale after Lord Lonsdale, the famous English sporting Earl and cigar aficionado of that period. Now many other brands use the name as well.

On its lid label each box carries a curious inscription written in English to the effect that the cigars should be smoked within one month of the date of shipment from Havana or otherwise they should be carefully matured for about one year.

Rafael Gonzalez cigars contain a light tasting blend of filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Tasting Notes

Mild in aroma and flavour, best after a light summer lunch. The construction is very good and the draw is excellent, all a good representation of what a mild cuban should be.

Reviewed by Bill Fode (July 2000) I was provided three Rafael Gonzalez Petit Coronas. They all three arrived in great condition. Two of the three were a slight darker brown then the other one. They all had varying sized sun spots on them. I let them sit in the dor for about a week and a half before smoking them. I smoked them three nights consecutively. One I smoked with a nice glass of port, one with a pint of stout, and one with a glass of HC7. The port complimented the cigar the best. All three cigars were very well constructed. There were no soft or hard spots. The pre-light draw was excellent on all three of them. The burn was also excellent. I have never smoked one of these cigars before so I have nothing to compare it to. To me, they seemed young and that more time was needed in the dor to age some. I was able to detect the earthy flavor of the traditional Cuban cigar, and also picked up hints of honey. The cigars were one dimensional with a dry and very short finish and mild in body. I wish I had some to age a while and then make a comparison. Thanks again for this opportunity and I hope I was able to provide a decent review for your readers.

Very good draw, even burn. Starts with a light spice that maintains all the way to the end. Somewhere between mild and medium with stronger finish. I found it quite wood, creamy with some vanilla flavors. Could not taste any sweetness or honey. Not my favorite but definitely a good stick. Some suggest an aging for at least 4 years to enjoy at it's full potential. I'm not that patient though.

I really enjoyed this cigar, consistent all the way down, lovely smell and creamy flavour. Made really well, good draw and lasted quite a while, I would definitely be getting another to keep for an evening smoke. For the price it was excellent, Cream turned to a woody flavour near the end.

This is one of my favourite little sticks. A very neatly constructed, nice smelling cigar (ceder and mild tobacco). Not a hugely extensive flavour profile. But the mild/medium smoke carries woody and sweet tobacco notes. Short finish but this is all you need in a little smoke. The best thing about these though is that they are so so consistant - Burn, timing, flavour, construction - once you have had a couple you know exactly what your getting. Excellent small sticks.
