Hoyo de Monterrey owes its origin to the town of San Juan y Martinez, which lies at the heart of the Vuelta Abajo zone. Here the Hoyo de Monterrey plantation, one of the great Vegas de Primera, can be reached through a gate on the town's main square inscribed "Hoyo de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1960."

"Hoyo" literally means "hole" and in this case describes the low-lying position of the plantation on the fertile banks of San Juan y Martinez river.  Jose Gener, a Spaniard from Tarragona, first used the name of his vega on a brand of Habanos in 1865.

The flavour of Hoyo de Monterrey's blend makes it an attractive choice for those who seek a delicate yet aromatic Habano that is lighter to the taste but with great elegance and complexity.

Hoyo de Monterrey was the first brand to introduce a Petit Robusto in 2005, the 50 ring gauge size with a shorter length to suit those who like thicker formats, but do not always have the time to enjoy them.

Tasting Notes

93 / 100

"...Smoking this cigar is like chewing on a luxurious caramel, as its sweetness is profoundly dense and elegant. Notes of coffee bean and chocolate-covered almonds add to its richness..."

Looks like I also got a dud. This was the genuinely the worst cigar Ive had and proved un-smokeable. It had a strange mix of consistencies on touch before lifting. Once lit, it canoed badly, with the ash inside looking pitted and abnormal. The draw was next to impossible. The taste was terrible and I wasnt too upset when it went out for the second time in five minutes. I disassembled it and found the binder covered with greenish spots - nasty. I have to assume this had some diseased leaf, but I wont be rushing back to try another. If I could feel it wasnt right before lighting, so should the maker.

As an introduction to the Cuban cigar world this is perfect. Really good flavours and burn, I cannot recommend this enough.

Mixed feelings on this, started off well, nice and light creamy cigar, was getting lots of smoke but then started burn unevenly and then kept on going out, I was drawing regularly every 30secs or so but frustratingly kept going out, not sure if it was poor draw but I’ve found in the past if I keep drawing too quickly then it just makes you feel sick and ruins the experience of a nice cigar, maybe one to age in the humidor for a while before smoking

Well what can I say… first of all I’m far from a connoisseur of cigars, I like what I like and enjoy sampling various cigars… Partagas is my favourite Cuban; tonight I fancied something different so I took this stick out of my humidor expectations wasn’t high as I know through reviews online this is a weak or light strength cigar… my mind was taken back by the perfect draw and rich Cuban flavours seeping through onto my taste buds… When people say cigars create a spiritual moment this cigar definitely did this for me. I can’t comment on the flavours because words wouldn’t do it justice… I fully endorse this cigar

The cigar overall burned well, but had 1 in 10 exception where I was left with a 1 .5 inch uneven burn with no visible reason why (no moisture or compression). The taste overall is not bad, but varies abit from cigar to cigar. It is mild enough for me, producing a pleasant enough aftertaste with no catching in the throat. I dont regret buying them, as I like mild cigars, and this one was overall not bad at all. The family also did not mind it too much. It isnt a Davidoff 2000 Special, but at the price it is a more affordable alternative. I found you really cant rush this one, as it is infinitly better when left buring slowly. It does require a punch, and a decent humador to stay in shape.
