COHIBA

Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos.

It was created in 1966 for President Fidel Castro himself and was made at the then top secret, but now world famous, El LLaguito factory. At first, it was only seen outside Cuba as gifts for heads of state and visiting diplomats.

Since 1982 Cohiba has been available in limited quantities to the open market.

The name is an ancient Taino Indian word for the bunches of tobacco leaves that Columbus first saw being smoked by the original inhabitants of Cuba - the earliest known form of a Habano.

The leaves for Cohiba are the "selection of selection" from the 5 finest Vegas de Primera in San Juan y Martinez and San Luis districts of the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Uniquely amongst Habanos up to three of Cohiba's filler leaves , the seco, ligero and the rare medio tiempo, undergo an additional fermentation in barrels. This unique process produces a special aroma and flavour you will only find in Cohiba.

LINEA 1492 - SIGLO II

The Cohiba Línea 1492 range was first announced at a reception at the Captain General's Palace in Havana on 4th November 1992, which took place during a Festival held to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus.

The Linea 1492, originally consisting of five sizes - Siglo I, II, III, IV and V before the VI was introduced in 2002, were expressly introduced to mark Columbus's 500th Anniversary and each Siglo (which means 'Century' in Spanish) commemorates one the five subsequent centuries.

The Linea 1492 is classified as medium flavoured and remains the lightest flavoured line of Cohibas.

Please note: Matches not included.

Tasting Notes

Though this Mareva format resembles those of its kind it has it's own character. With greater lightness, freshness and richness of flavours this will definitely tempt the nature of those who find Cohibas too strong.

"An undercurrent of ground pepper adds some piquancy to this petit corona, which draws well but has a slightly uneven burn. Notes of leather and orange peel gain intensity as the cigar progresses..."

Ordered two of these in 2018 with the intention of ageing them in the humidor for a few years to mellow out the flavours, on Christmas Day after such a challenging year for everyone it felt like an appropriate time to pull these out and enjoy them after a nice meal with my partner in our new home. Lasted her about 40 minutes and me about an hour as I like to take my time and tend to smoke mine a little further down. During that time we discovered that a Sherry Sour cocktail is the perfect pairing, but Havanna Club 7yr works well too, as does a nice red (Bordeaux in this case). We each encountered slightly uneven burn but overall a great smoke. At first a creamy flavour with coffee notes and then slightly spicier towards the end. Cedar throughout, slightly saline. If you have a humidor I strongly recommend ageing a few of your go-to cigars, the difference even just a year or two makes is incredible (a little longer if you have the patience).

This was my first venture into Cohibas and it could end up being a very expensive move because I loved every puff. Smooth and creamy from the outset the first third gave me cedar and salt, gradually building in complexity and setting up for what was, for me, an outstanding second third of sweetness, cocoa, and coffee. As you move into the final third youre left with a mix of euphoria that you have enjoyed such a fabulous smoke but disappointment that it will end. I know Cubans often come with quality control issues but the build was outstanding and the draw spot on. This will be firmly in my list of favourite cigars. Now, wheres my bank manager?

Always a delicious smoke; great draw, wonderful odour. Gentle pepper bomb; just enough to let you know its there. On the lighter side, but very enjoyable nonetheless.

A very enjoyable flavour with a Moist and smooth flavour throughout the whole burn. A fine cigar to sit back and relax with, Nile enjoying an after meal fine spirit or coffee. Be sure to have time to spare as with near 45- 50 minutes burn time, it’s one cigar that will let you unwind and enjoy the moment.
