COHIBA

Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos.

It was created in 1966 for President Fidel Castro himself and was made at the then top secret, but now world famous, El LLaguito factory. At first, it was only seen outside Cuba as gifts for heads of state and visiting diplomats.

Since 1982 Cohiba has been available in limited quantities to the open market.

The name is an ancient Taino Indian word for the bunches of tobacco leaves that Columbus first saw being smoked by the original inhabitants of Cuba - the earliest known form of a Habano.

The leaves for Cohiba are the "selection of selection" from the 5 finest Vegas de Primera in San Juan y Martinez and San Luis districts of the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Uniquely amongst Habanos up to three of Cohiba's filler leaves , the seco, ligero and the rare medio tiempo, undergo an additional fermentation in barrels. This unique process produces a special aroma and flavour you will only find in Cohiba.

Tasting Notes

Smooth and full of flavour. This cigar has a nice even draw from start to finish. Recommended to everyone looking for a good quality cigar.

"Though a bit rough in appearance, this gnarly little cigar imparts a creamy, nutty smoke rich with notes of almonds and salt. Tasty and medium bodied...."

Im new to Cigar smoking and thought Id experiment smoking different cigars. I bought 2 of these and was hugely disappointed. I know it is not a top end Cigar by no stretch of the imagination, but I thought for the Money spent it would at least light properly and stay lit. The wrapper unravelled on both almost immediately. Then there was the draw, I spent that much time trying to get a draw from it that eventually it just tasted sour, the cigar was wrapped so tightly. You live and learn and maybe its my inexperience that is an issue. I bought some Guantanemera Crystales for half the price and they smoked really well and were nice and mild for a beginner, produced nice smoke and never unravelled.

Reviewed by A Dyer Construction: Few deformations, quite a smooth, rich, reddish brown wrapper with an oily sheen. Even throughout with no hard or soft spots. A well rolled cigar (almost a cigaritto). Pre-smoke: Very nice aroma, load a box of these into your humidor and, like with most other Cohiba cigars, you will be greeted with a beautiful aroma each time you open it. Aroma is soft and woody with a hint of roasted coffee bean; not very rich and strong but nice, though a little tart. This cigar cut well, no problems with un-ravelling or ripping. Lit fine, did not start "tunneling" or "canoeing" at all (even burn throughout in fact) and the draw was fairly easy. Smoking: Smoking this cigar you are pleasantly surprised by it's smooth yet spicy flavour (though a touch of tartness when young). The coctail of flavours is not very complex, obviousely due to its small ring guage, but they are not too bad all the same. Flavours of cedar wood, roasted coffee bean and suint flood the palett at first, with a hint of liquorice and cocoa later on (mainly with a little age). This is a medium flavour and a light-medium body (not really earthy or leathery, more soft, woody and a hint of sweetness). Does not overpower the senses at all. This cigar becomes more spicey as you smoke it, but it does not become too hot near the end. I have smoked some larger cigars such as the H. Upmann Corona Major which burn the palett almost from the start, so I must give this little Habano it's due. On the other hand, it never really has the chance to get going as it is gone within 30 minutes of lighting up. As you smoke this cigar you are enticed by the flavour, but you keep wishing that it was larger and was able to display more complexity. Conclusion: A good, and usually consistent Habano, but sometimes you will wish it was something larger. However this is perfect for after a nice lunch with a cup of coffee; if that is what you want, this is pretty much perfect. These are quite good straight from the tobacconist humidor, but with 6 months to a year aging these can burn a little better with a slight improvement in flavour; they become a touch smoother and less tart with more liquorice hints, lovely, but still not as good as a larger Cohiba like the Siglo VI of course. Score 7/10 Cohiba- Nice review, again good and informative tasting notes, nice reference to flavours and appearance, and generally speaking a nice smoke, however not the best in the range and in short the same goes for the review. Reviewed by Mat Nicholls Score 7/10 Yep, good stuff, makes me want to go and try one. Only thought is I'd like to know what the reviewer usually liked and is therefore comparing it with. Good work all the same. Reviewed by Richard Whitwell (aka Cowell) Score 8/10 Descriptive review. One gets a good sense of the flavors involved. Good recommendation for time and drink. Perhaps comments could have been more straightforward (it has "x" instead of it has "y, but more like z"). Spellchecking in some manner definitively warranted. Reviewed by Alec OVERALL SCORE: 22/30

Think I had one of those occasional bad bunch of the pack, the draw was really really tight and therefore can only say I was disappointed, the aromas were lovely, cocoa and vanilla notes, it's just a shame I couldn't get anything from the drawer, from the other reviews I see this has not been issue, so I will try another and hopefully not encounter the same problems. Rating based on great aroma but no draw.
